The federal judge said the NIH violated federal law by arbitrarily canceling more than $1 billion in research grants because of their perceived connection to DEI initiatives.

The judge accused the Trump administration of discriminating against racial minorities and L.G.B.T.Q. people and ordered the government to restore much of the funding.

A federal judge ruled that some of the grant terminations by the National Institutes of Health on DEI grounds are “void and illegal.”
