US stocks were mixed on Wednesday, with the Dow posting a fresh record but Big Tech stocks wobbling as chances grew that the record-long US shutdown will end soon. Meanwhile, hopes are rising for a key House vote that could end the longest government shutdown in US history as soon as today.

Dow notches record high close, traders bet on end to govt shutdown
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained almost 13% in 2025, trailing the S&P 500's 16% rise and the Nasdaq's nearly 22% increase.
U.S. stocks were mixed in afternoon trade, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average giving all of its morning gains. "Animal spirits" only briefly returned to Wall Street this morning with technology stocks turning sharply higher ahead of Nvidia Corp earnings.
Over in Europe, markets are moving higher once again. London’s FTSE 100 is up 0.8%, hitting a new record high amid telecom giant Vodafone’s stellar earnings report. Elsewhere, the French CAC 40 was also last seen up 0.8%, while the German DAX was 0.2% higher.
The rout, partly fueled by investors’ worries of a US equities bubble, led to the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s worst three-day stretch in months.
What goes up must come down. The Dow Jones Industrial Average achieved a record close on Wednesday, finishing the day above the 48,000 level for the first time in its history. But since then, momentum has shifted.
