The Winter Games will make a return visit to Salt Lake City in 2034 while the 2030 Olympics were tentatively set for the French Alps, officials said Wednesday.

Salt Lake City being preferred as a shoo-in to host the 2034 Winter Olympics was expected. The surprise was the IOC favoring the French Alps bid for the 2030 edition on Wednesday.

The Winter Games took place in Salt Lake City in 2002 and in the French Alps in 1992 in Albertville. Sapporo, Japan, which previously hosted the Games, has expressed interest in bringing them back.
