John Beam, a former community college football coach featured on Netflix's "Last Chance U," has died after being shot on the Laney College campus.

Coach John Beam of the Netflix docuseries Last Chance U was shot in the head and killed on Thursday in what police are calling a “targeted incident.”

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee described Beam as a “giant” and a mentor, educator and lifeline for young people.
