After promising during his election campaign to put import taxes back at the center of US economic policy during his second term as president, President Donald Trump has taken steps in that direction.

Trump has long proposed raising tariffs—or taxes on imported goods that the businesses importing them pay the U.S. government—before the election, and said in November he’ll impose a 25% tariff rate on all imports from Mexico and Canada on the first day of his presidency and will impose an additional 10% tariff rate on all imports from China on top of other tariffs.

China on Tuesday said it will impose new tariffs on select U.S. imports, responding to President Trump’s latest levy on Chinese goods. U.S. coal and liquefied natural gas will be subject to a 15% tariff,
