The coldest temperatures of the winter so far are expected in West Virginia over the next few days as what some are calling a "polar vortex" continues to impact the state's weather.

There are a few steps to follow to get the most accurate measurement possible and definitely some requirements that could trip you up if you don't know what you're doing.

Snow does more than bring water to the ground. According to the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA), as snow falls through the atmosphere, nitrogen attaches to it, and then when the snow melts, it slowly releases it into the soil, providing a natural fertilizer.

Most of West Virginia will get additional snow before the weekend on top of the 6-12 inches the central part of the state has already seen since Sunday.
