U.S. safety investigators are examining the maintenance history of a UPS cargo MD-11 plane following its crash in Louisville, Kentucky, killing 13 people. The National Transportation Safety Board is reviewing repair work done in San Antonio,
Built in 1991 and converted to cargo use in 2006, the jet was among 29 MD-11s still operated by UPS ( UPS ). The model, once a long-haul passenger plane, has one of the worst safety records among commercial aircraft still flying, though this is the first fatal MD-11 crash since 2009.
FAA records show the plane had cracks and corrosion in its main structure and a fuel tank. The plane completed 28 flights between maintenance and the crash.
