The Houston Police Department has terminated a probationary officer following an investigation into a use of force incident caught on video in 2024.

The use of force incident happened while Ortiz was a detention officer at the jail and just three months before he entered the police academy. In December, the police department reassigned Ortiz to administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

Footage released on Friday shows that the attacker fired at least one shot from inside his truck before police fatally shot him.
