The cryptocurrency industry and those responsible for securing it are still in shock following Friday’s heist, likely by North Korea, that drained $1.5 billion from Dubai-based exchange Bybit, making the theft by far the biggest ever in digital asset history.

TRM Labs claims North Korean hackers stole $1.5B in Ethereum from Bybit, linking it to past cyber heists. No independent verification yet as investigations continue.

The hack that rocked the crypto market and saw most prices tumbling was called the "largest crypto theft of all time, by some margin," by Elliptic's Tom Robinson, co-founder and chief scientist. "The next largest crypto theft would be the $611 million stolen from Poly Network in 2021. In fact it may even be the largest single theft of all time."

On-chain sleuthing linked Friday's $1.4 billion hack of crypto exchange Bybit to North Korea's Lazarus Group, Arkham Intelligence said.

Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit said last week hackers had stolen digital tokens worth around $1.5 billion, in what researchers called the biggest crypto heist of all time.
