Players can obtain capes by migrating their Mojang account, owning both Bedrock and Java editions before a deadline, participating in events, or by contributing ideas to the game.

The original version of Minecraft, Java Edition , which supports cross-platform play between Windows, macOS, and Linux, could be purchased and played by creating an account with the developer Mojang .

This Fall, new Minecraft Java players will need to create a Microsoft account to log-in. Meanwhile, existing Mojang accounts will need to migrate in early 2021.
