The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced Friday that it will begin shutting down, weeks after Congress canceled previously approved funding for the nation's steward of public media access.

The closure marks a victory in Donald Trump’s war against public media. The CPB’s announcement cites the federal recissions package, which clawed back $1.1 billion in previously approved funding for the organization, and its exclusion from a fiscal spending bill for the first time in over five decades.

The move by CPB — which has provided funding to PBS and NPR — to wind down comes after President Trump led a successful effort to defund public media. In mid-July, Congress approved to Trump’s rescission package, which cut $1.1 billion for CPB over the next two years.
