The percentage of U.S. adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or something other than heterosexual has continued to rise, hitting an all-time high of 9.3%, up from 7.6% in 2023, according to a Gallup report released Thursday.

Gallup surveyed more than 14,000 U.S. adults for the poll to find 85.7% of respondents said they are straight, 5.2% are bisexual, 2.0% are gay, 1.4% are lesbian, 1.3% are transgender and just under 1% mentioned a different LGBTQ+ identity, such as pansexual or asexual (5% declined to answer the question).

Recent Gallup polling indicates a rising percentage of U.S. adults identify as LGBTQ+ with 9.3% of those polled in 2024, which is up more than 1% from 2023.

The highest number of adults to identify as LGBTQ+ are those born between 1997 and 2006. Known as Generation Z, a full 23.1% of them – more than 1 in 5 – call themselves something other than straight.

The number of Americans identifying as LGBTQ+ continued to rise, according to the latest Gallup poll. In 2024, 9.3% of U.S. adults identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or something other than heterosexual.

The poll, which sampled 14,162 U.S. adults throughout 2024, found the rate of LGBTQ+ identification varied widely across generations. Generation Z and millennials were the most likely to identify as LGBTQ+, with rates of 23.1% and 14.2%, respectively.

The percentage of young people identifying as LGBTQ+ has increased over the past two years from an average of 18.8% in 2020 through 2022 to an average of 22.7%, according to the poll. Gallup also observed an increase of nearly 2 percentage points among millennials and an increase of 1 percentage point among Generation X.
