Trump’s misguided belief that inside of every Canadian there is an American waiting to get out is a misconception that is actually older than the U.S. itself. Its history, however, offers a cautionary tale for Trump because it has been responsible for some of America’s most humiliating foreign policy failures.

The law, billed as an effort “to safeguard Greenland’s political integrity,” came ahead of parliamentary elections.

Greenland plans to ban foreign and anonymous donations to its political parties after the Trump administration has said the US president is serious about taking control of the vast Arctic island. The government of Greenland on Monday put forward an emergency parliamentary proposal to safeguard the country’s “political integrity” ahead of elections due by April 6.

Some of Trumps threats to take over Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal are based on actual U.S. strategic goals. Others are just idiotic.

The president is increasingly threatening other countries with tariffs for issues that have little to do with trade.
