The 49ers are limiting Christian McCaffrey's training camp reps to keep the running back healthy for the season opener and beyond.

That left second-year back Isaac Guerendo as the main backup to McCaffrey. They also have Patrick Taylor and fifth-round rookie Jordan James. But this week, the 49ers have added to the mix. San Francisco signed Ameer Abdullah, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.

The San Francisco 49ers are adding another name to their loaded running back room. Although nobody will surpass Christian McCaffrey on the depth chart, former Las Vegas Raiders starter Ameer Abdullah will now join the group to compete for a roster spot over the next month.
