NEW YORK, Dec. 24 (UPI) --Oprah Winfrey says she chose to act in, as well as produce, the film Selma because the real-life civil-rights activist she plays was a devoted fan of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Winfrey will play Annie Lee Cooper, an elderly woman who tried to register to vote and was unfairly denied by Sheriff Clark. She was a visible leader amongst the civil rights protesters in Selma.
Renaissance woman Oprah Winfrey also landed an NAACP Image Award nomination for her role as real-life activist Annie Lee Cooper, who was arrested in 1965 for punching Selma sheriff Jim Clark.
Annie Lee Cooper is portrayed by Oprah in the upcoming movie 'Selma,' and Oprah Prime will have a special 'Celebrating Dr. King and the Selma Marches 50 years later' on OWN tonight at 8 p.m.
