O’Connell joined the band in 2001 after the departure of Taking Back Sunday’s original drummer, Steven DeJoseph. He has recorded on all of the band’s releases from 2001’s “Lullaby” EP (2001) to 2023’s “152.” The remaining members of Taking Back Sunday have not commented on the departure yet.

O’Connell and Lazzara were both on TBS’ debut album, “Tell All Your Friends,” in 2002, and had been with the band since. The current lineup still includes Lazzara and original guitarist John Nolan, who had left from 2003 to 2010 for another project, Straylight Run.

And now, 24 years later, O’Connell is leaving the band, too. “After nearly 25 years s the drummer of, I want to confirm that I am no longer with the band,” he said in a statement posted to his Instagram account.
