Employees with King Soopers were up early Thursday morning to get on the picket line and go on strike after a series of issues they said they want addressed by the large grocery chain.

The strike will affect 77 stores in Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties, as well as in Boulder and Louisville.

Some 10,000 grocery store workers across the greater Denver area went on strike Thursday, claiming unfair and illegal negotiating practices by King Soopers while their union has been negotiating a new contract with the store chain.

The two-week labor stoppage is starting with Denver stores. Colorado Springs and Pueblo could join later. See list of impacted stores and pharmacies.

King Soopers, a chain owned by Kroger, with 121 stores in Colorado and Wyoming, has been negotiating a new contract with the union since October.

Kim Cordova, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7, has said staffing is one of the major issues for employees.
