Lake Hamilton was created in 1932 with the construction of Carpenter Dam by Arkansas Power and Light. The idea started when former steamboat pilot Flave Carpenter, working as a deputy U.S. marshal in the Ouachita Mountains, spotted a prime dam site while tracking moonshiners. He shared the location with AP&L founder Harvey Couch, who saw the hydroelectric potential.
